It’s not too late…

If you’ve always regretted not studying abroad, it’s not too late to make it happen. Below is a list of incredible study/work abroad opportunities that can either pay you to live overseas or fund your education. Each program has unique requirements and deadlines, so I’m sharing this information early to give you ample time to prepare, as many of these opportunities are highly competitive. Having participated in two of these programs (Princeton in Africa and Schwarzman Scholars), I can personally attest to how rewarding the experience was (and well worth all the effort). ⭐️Study Abroad: Fulbright Program.

Overview: If you are interested in an opportunity to study abroad, Fulbright Scholarship is the perfect opportunity. Active in over 160 countries, the program offers prestigious grants for students, scholars, teachers, and professionals to study, teach, or conduct research abroad. Fulbright Foreign Student Program specifically grants approximately 4,000 opportunities to international students for Master's or Doctorate studies in the U.S., including research on various campuses.

  • Eligibility: To qualify, applicants must reside in the nominating country at the time of application, possess a U.S. bachelor’s degree equivalent with a strong academic record, and demonstrate English fluency (e.g., TOEFL or IELTS scores). Additional eligibility criteria vary by country.

  • Salary: Fulbright grants offer comprehensive benefits, including J-1 visa sponsorship, funding support, health benefits, and enrichment activities. The exact financial support and benefits package may differ based on the specific grant and country of origin.

⭐️Work Abroad: Princeton in Africa 🌍

Overview: Are you interested in an opportunity to work in Africa? The Princeton in Africa (PiAf) Fellowship offers young professionals and recent graduates the chance to gain experience in development across Africa. Fellows work in diverse roles, contributing to impactful organizations. The 12-month program supports personal and professional growth and often serves as a gateway into the field of development.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be young professionals or recent graduates by June 2025, with a bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. from a U.S.-accredited or African institution. English proficiency is required, and French is preferred for some placements. Candidates must be under 35 years old during the fellowship and have a passport valid through August 2026.

  • Salary: Fellows receive housing, a living stipend, visas/work permits, and medical and evacuation insurance. Financial aid is available for those in need. Fellowship stipends cover living costs directly related to the fellowship.

⭐️Work Abroad Opportunity: Princeton in Asia (PIA) Fellowship 🌍

Overview: PiA fellowships offer one- or two-year immersive work placements in Asia. Fellows work in various sectors, contributing to the host organizations and communities. These fellowships emphasize cultural immersion, relationship building, and professional growth, aligning with PiA’s mission of fostering mutual appreciation and cross-cultural understanding between the U.S. and Asia.

  • Eligibility: PiA seeks applicants committed to its mission. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree, though additional experience or credentials may be required for some positions. PiA accepts candidates with master’s degrees but not terminal or professional degrees (e.g., Ph.D., law). Check the website for more information.

  • Salary: Fellows receive a stipend from their host organization, which covers the cost of safe housing, food, telecommunications, and local travel. Additional support includes health and safety provisions, visa reimbursement, etc. PiA offers financial assistance through travel grants, ensuring that finances are not a barrier to participation.

  • Application Deadline: The 2025 PiA fellowship application will open on September 3, 2024. The 2025-26 Application Guide and 2025-26 Fellowship Descriptions document will also be shared on this date.

⭐️ Work Abroad Opportunity: Princeton in Latin America (PiLA) Fellowship.

Overview: Princeton in Latin America (PiLA) offers year-long service fellowships that place recent college graduates with NGOs and multilateral organizations across Latin America and the Caribbean. Fellows work in diverse fields, from education and public health to environmental conservation and economic development. These fellowships provide hands-on experience, fostering leadership skills and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by communities in the region.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be graduates of accredited U.S. or Canadian universities, with professional Spanish language skills. The program is open to young professionals and graduating seniors. International students who graduated within the last four years from a U.S. or Canadian institution may also apply, but visa eligibility may affect placement.

  • Salary: No traditional salary, but Fellows receive support from their host organizations, including stipends that cover basic living expenses, depending on the placement.

⭐️Work Abroad Opportunity: Global Health Corps Fellowships.

Overview: Global Health Corps (GHC) is a leadership accelerator focused on advancing global health equity. The organization believes that health is a fundamental human right and works to build a diverse community of leaders dedicated to this cause. GHC empowers individuals by promoting integrity, fostering inclusive collaboration, encouraging resilience, and supporting continuous learning through scholarships, grants, and fellowships, all within a global network of over 1,200 changemakers.

⭐️Study Abroad Scholarship Program: Schwarzman Scholarship Program.

Overview: Are you interested in a leadership program and scholarship opportunity in China? Schwarzman Scholars is a prestigious leadership program aimed at developing the next generation of global leaders. Scholars will engage in a rigorous academic curriculum, interact with influential leaders, and gain a deep understanding of global issues.

  • Eligibility: Candidates must possess an undergraduate degree, be between 18 and 28 years old, and demonstrate proficiency in English. Ideal applicants show strong leadership abilities, intellectual prowess, and exemplary character. The program seeks individuals who are open-minded, empathetic, and capable of engaging with diverse perspectives.

  • Salary: Schwarzman Scholars receive a comprehensive financial package that covers tuition, room and board, travel, and personal expenses.

  • Deadline: The application for U.S. and global candidates is open from April 10, 2024, to September 12, 2024, at 3 p.m. EDT. For applicants with Chinese passports, the deadline is May 20, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. CST.

⭐️Study Abroad Scholarship Program: Chevening Scholarship Program.

Overview: Chevening Scholarships provide fully-funded opportunities for exceptional emerging leaders from around the world to pursue a one-year master’s degree at any UK university. This scholarship covers all expenses including flights, accommodation, and course fees, allowing recipients to focus entirely on their academic and professional development.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be citizens of a Chevening-eligible country or territory, have at least two years of work experience, and hold an undergraduate degree that qualifies for a UK master’s program. They must apply to three different UK university courses and receive an unconditional offer from at least one by the application deadline.

  • Salary: Chevening Scholarships are fully funded, covering tuition fees, travel costs, accommodation, and other expenses.

⭐️Study Abroad Scholarship Program: Cambridge Gates Scholarship Program.

Overview: Yet another amazing study abroad opportunity, the Gates Cambridge Scholarship offers approximately 80 full-cost scholarships annually for exceptional students from outside the UK to pursue postgraduate degrees at the University of Cambridge. Scholarships are awarded based on intellectual ability, commitment to social impact, leadership potential, and course choice.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must demonstrate outstanding intellectual ability, a strong commitment to improving the lives of others, and leadership potential. They should also have compelling reasons for choosing their course of study. To qualify, candidates must be from outside the UK and meet the academic and personal criteria set by the Gates Cambridge Trust.

  • Salary: The scholarship is fully funded, including tuition, maintenance allowance (£20,000 per year for up to four years for PhD students), economy airfare, visa costs, and health surcharge. Additional discretionary funding is available for academic development, dependent children, fieldwork, maternity/paternity, and hardship.

  • Deadline: .Applications for the 2025-26 program will open in September 2024. The deadline is not known yet.

⭐️Travel/Work Abroad Opportunity: The Peace Corps.

Overview: If you seek an opportunity to travel, volunteer, and earn, then this is for you. The Peace Corps promotes world peace and friendship through community-based development and intercultural understanding. Each year, volunteers work in various sectors—Agriculture, Education, etc, enhancing mutual understanding by sharing American values and learning from local cultures, fostering global connections and cultural exchange.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be U.S. citizens and at least 18 years old. Specific requirements vary by position but generally include a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and a commitment to serve for 27 months.

  • Salary: Peace Corps Volunteers receive a modest living allowance, housing, and health coverage. Upon completion of service, they receive a readjustment allowance of approximately $10,000.

  • Deadline: Applications are accepted year-round. However, applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible to ensure availability for desired service dates.

⭐️Study Abroad Scholarship Program: The Churchill Scholarship Program.

Overview: The Churchill Scholarship, established by Sir Winston Churchill, aims to enhance the US-UK partnership in science and technology. This prestigious award funds 18 scholars annually for a year of graduate study at the University of Cambridge. It covers tuition, travel, visa fees, and provides a stipend, totaling approximately $65,000.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be US citizens, enrolled in or recently graduated from a participating institution, and hold a bachelor’s degree. The Kanders Churchill Scholarship in Science Policy is also available for those with a background in STEM who wish to pursue a Master’s in Public Policy.

  • Salary: The Churchill Scholarship includes coverage for tuition, roundtrip airfare, visa fees, health surcharge, and a stipend. Recipients are also eligible for a $4,000 research grant. The total financial support is around $65,000.

  • Deadline: Friday, November 1, 2024, at 5pm Eastern Time. Prospective applicants should contact their institution’s scholarship office for internal deadlines and procedures.

⭐️Study Abroad Scholarship Program: The Mitchell Scholarship Program.

Overview: If you are from Maine and have dreams of studying abroad and require funding, the Mitchell Institute offers scholarships to graduating seniors from public high schools in Maine who plan to pursue higher education. The program supports students attending accredited two-year or four-year colleges or universities.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must be full-time residents of Maine and graduating from a public high school in Maine. Students must plan to enroll in a two-year or four-year degree program at an accredited institution in the fall following their graduation. Scholarships are awarded based on academic performance, community impact, and financial need.

  • Salary: Each Mitchell Scholarship is valued at $10,000, disbursed in four annual installments of $2,500.

  • Deadline: January 1 - April 1 each year. The next application cycle will open on January 1, 2025.

⭐️Study Abroad Scholarship Program: The Clarendon Fund.

Overview: The Clarendon Fund at Oxford University offers over 200 fully-funded scholarships annually for exceptional graduate students. This prestigious program not only provides financial support but also integrates scholars into a dynamic and internationally diverse academic community. The scholarships cover course fees and living expenses, with no restrictions on nationality, residency, or field of study.

  • Eligibility: Applicants must apply to Oxford by the relevant December or January deadline. There is no separate application for the scholarship itself. Eligibility extends to all full-time and part-time DPhil and Master’s courses, and selection is based on outstanding academic merit and potential.

  • Salary: Clarendon Scholarships fully cover course fees and provide a grant for living expenses throughout the period of fee liability.

  • Deadline: The December or January deadline applicable to their course. There is no additional deadline specifically for the Clarendon Scholarship.
